Containerised Storage in Croydon: How It Works

Storage-Units-Croydon

If you need furniture or household storage in Croydon or South London, the type of facility you choose affects both the cost and the safety of your belongings. Not all storage services work the same way, and choosing the wrong type can mean paying more for fewer protections than you expected. F Smith & Son has provided containerised storage as part of its removals operation for over 90 years, and the system works quite differently from hiring a standard self-storage unit.

How Containerised Storage Works

F Smith & Son uses large removal trucks custom-built to carry individual storage containers. Your goods are carefully loaded into these containers at your property, then the sealed container is lifted directly from the truck and placed into our secure warehouse in Croydon. The container stays sealed and on its pallet throughout the storage period.

The advantage of this approach is that your belongings are handled as few times as possible. With a standard self-storage unit, goods are loaded onto a van at your property, unloaded into the unit at the facility, then loaded again when you need them back. With containerised storage, the container moves as a single unit — your furniture is loaded once at your property and not touched again until it is delivered to your new address. Each additional handling step adds time, cost, and the risk of damage; reducing handling reduces all three.

Security and Insurance at Our Croydon Depot

Our Croydon facility has CCTV monitoring and is alarmed. Each storage container is security-sealed and assigned a unique identifying code, which is recorded on a detailed inventory alongside the contents of each container. This means we know exactly what is in each unit at all times.

We offer insurance cover for goods in our storage facility up to £250,000, which can be increased on written request. Before your goods go into storage, check whether your home contents insurance policy covers belongings held in a commercial storage facility — some policies include this, many do not. Our team can advise on cover options at the time of booking.

Who Uses Croydon Storage

Our storage is used by a wide range of customers for different reasons:

In all cases, the advantage of using an established removals company for storage — rather than a standalone self-storage provider — is continuity. The same company that loads your goods at your current home stores them and delivers them to the new address. There is no second loading, no change of contractor between stages, and a single point of contact throughout.

Getting a Quote

Storage costs depend on the volume of goods and the length of the storage period. The most accurate way to get a quotation is to have a surveyor assess the volume at your property — the same survey we carry out for removal quotations. This lets us specify the right container size and give you a confirmed price rather than an estimate based on a description.

Storage arranged as part of a house removal is typically more cost-effective than storage arranged independently, because the loading at your property only needs to happen once. If you think you may need storage as part of your move, mention it at the initial enquiry stage. We can also accommodate partial deliveries if you want specific rooms returned before others — for example, bedroom furniture before living room furniture if parts of the new property are still being worked on. If your plans change and you need to extend the storage period, let us know as early as possible and we will do our best to accommodate it.
